Visitors to the Island Hotel in Newport Beach can follow the beloved characters of “The Wizard of Oz” on their adventure-filled journey to the Emerald City — and get hungry in the process.

The hotel adjacent to Fashion Island has unveiled its annual holiday gingerbread display in the main lobby, this year called “The Wonderful World of Island Hotel.”

Pastry chef Andy de la Cruz and his culinary team handbuilt the display of colorful sweets that lets visitors follow the yellow brick road from Munchkinland to the Emerald City with Dorothy and Toto, the Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, Scarecrow, Glinda the Good Witch, the Wicked Witch of the West and more.

“The Wonderful World of Island Hotel” was created from 400 pounds of gingerbread dough, 300 pounds of fondant, 100 pounds of chocolate, 200 pounds of powdered sugar and 200 pounds of various candies representing colors of the rainbow.

The hotel also is a drop-off spot for Toys for Tots, a program run by the Marine Corps Reserve that distributes toys to children whose parents can’t afford to buy them gifts for the holidays.

The gingerbread display’s end date hasn’t been confirmed, but it could be as soon as the day after Christmas.
