Decommissioning the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station

From 1968 to 2012, nuclear energy production at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station helped clear the air in Southern California with its emissions-free electricity. In 2013, the plant was permanently retired and started on a new journey called decommissioning.

SONGS’ Public Information Officer John Dobken will provide an overview of the decommissioning process, show the progress being made to dismantle the structures on site, and explain how the spent nuclear fuel that remains is being safely stored.

Dobken,JOHN - SONGS

Promoting science and fact-based discussions about nuclear energy and spent nuclear fuel has been one of John’s passions for more than a decade.  He gets ample opportunity to do just that in his role of public information officer and media relations manager for the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station and Southern California Edison.  John manages relationships with local and national media, as well as social media channels and participates in community outreach.

Prior to joining SCE, John led external engagement strategies for Energy Northwest, owner and operator of Columbia Nuclear Generating Station in Washington state.  John has a master’s degree in business management, and a journalism degree from San Diego State University.  He worked as a television news anchor and reporter for 14 years at various stations across the country.
