DESCRIPTION:\n\nChancellor Howard Gillman\, Ph.D.\n\nHoward Gillman\, Ph.D.
 \, became UC Irvine’s sixth chancellor on Sept. 18\, 2014. He had previo
 usly served as provost and executive vice chancellor since June 2013 and i
 nterim chancellor since July 1\, 2014.\n\nAn award-winning scholar and tea
 cher\, he has academic appointments in the departments of political scienc
 e\, history\, law\, and criminology\, law &amp\; society. Among his books 
 are The Constitution Besieged: The Rise and Demise of Lochner Era Police P
 owers Jurisprudence (Duke 1993)\, The Votes That Counted: How the Court De
 cided the 2000 Presidential Election (Chicago 2001)\, and American Constit
 utionalism (with Mark Graber and Keith Whittington). He has also co-edited
  two other volumes and authored more than 40 articles and book chapters. H
 e has received many awards for his scholarship\, and for teaching excellen
 ce and dedication to students.\n\nPrior to his appointment as provost and 
 executive vice chancellor at UC Irvine\, Dr. Gillman was a professor of po
 litical science\, history\, and law at the University of Southern Californ
 ia. From 2007 to 2012\, he served as dean of the USC Dornsife College of L
 etters\, Arts and Sciences.\n\nA native of Southern California\, Dr. Gillm
 an grew up in North Hollywood and was a first-generation college student. 
 He earned bachelor's\, master's\, and doctoral degrees in political scienc
 e at UCLA. His wife\, Ellen\, earned a bachelor's degree at UC San Diego a
 nd a master's and doctorate in psychology at UCLA. They have two children.
