_text]\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Transpacific Yacht Race (Transpac) is an offshore
yacht race starting off San Pedro\, Los Angeles at the Pt. Fermin buoy\, a
nd ending off Diamond Head Lighthouse in Honolulu\, a distance of around 2
 \,225 nautical miles(2\,560 mi\; 4\,121 km). Started in 1906 by Clarence W
. Macfarlane\, it is one of yachting's premier offshore races and attracts
entrants from all over the world. The race is organized by the Transpacif
ic Yacht Club.\n\nTranspac stands apart from other major ocean races as es
sentially a "downwind race\," as determined by normal weather patterns in
the eastern Pacific north of the equator. After two or three days of slogg
ing on the wind\, the fleet encounters the "Pacific High\," a mammoth\, wa
llowing blob of high pressure rotating clockwise between Hawaii and the We
st Coast of North America. As boats reach the lower edge of the high the w
ind bends aft and turns warm spinnakers go up\, shirts come off\, and sail
ors usually enjoy a pleasant ride the rest of the way.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_c
