DESCRIPTION:The Commodore’s Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce
  invites sailors of all ages to enter the 79th Annual Flight of the Lasers
 . Join us after the race at Newport Harbor Yacht Club for refreshments and
  presentation of the awards.\n\nAlthough it's not the America's Cup race\,
  Newport Beach's annual "Flight of the Lasers" race still has been the sta
 rting point for many blue-water sailors.\n\nMore than 60 entries are expec
 ted for the afternoon race\, which marks the 79th time Olympic class sailb
 oats have competed on Newport Bay in what has become a local tradition.\n\
 nOriginally called the "Flight of the Snowbirds\," because of the wooden b
 oats used in the race\, the event was renamed in 1975 after organizers dec
 ided to replace the aging\, wooden craft with more modern\, fiberglass boa
 ts\, known as "lasers\," used extensively in small boat racing including t
 he Olympics.\n\nThe race  begins at 1 p.m. West of the Balboa Pavilion an
 d will take about 90 minutes to complete. The course circumvents the harbo
